projectNADA does Dedication

This directorial debut by Justin Theroux is about an eccentric and obtuse New York children's book writer, Henry Roth played brilliantly by Billy Crudup. Dedication is a simple yet quirky love story between Henry Roth and Lucy Reilly (Mandy Moore) whom are forced to work together writing a children's book after mishap falls upon Roth's partner. Despite the simple storyline, this movie is still visually interesting with the influence of a quirky mix from Stone's Natural Born Killers, Aranofsky's Requiem for a Dream and Gondry's Science of Sleep and edgy editing. Dedication scored a mere 21% by top critics on Tomatometer but we think it's a very good first attempt.

The soundtrack was like frosting to the cake with it's bizarre and eclectic indie sounds by Deerhoof, Fischerspooner (one of my all time favorite bands) and Cat Power. Every track was imaginatively placed and injects hip and intensity to the movie. The composer, Edward Shearmur also delved into territories previously unexplored by himself and created a distinctly rock-oriented score on piano, with a small rock ensemble of electric guitar and altogether enhanced electronically resulting a unique score. Overall, this soundtrack is fantastic! Don't believe? Take a listen to this piece titled Stay Golden performed by Au Revoir Simone.
